  • Appo Hocton Heritage Panel Unveiled

26 August at 08:10 from atlas

Heritage panels associated with books I have written have been the order of the day these last few weeks. Following on the heels of the Italian panel in The Wood is one about Appo Hocton. You'll find it at the start of Appo Hocton Way, a small walking path at the top of Pioneer Crescent, and just above some of the wee wooden cottages Appo built on Hastings Street in the 1850s. On 25 August, Nelson City Councillor Trudie Brand, along with Appo's great granddaughter Diana Clark and great grandson Alvin Schroder (pictured here with me), unveiled a panel commemorating Appo, who was New Zealand's first recorded and first naturalised Chinese immigrant. Watching the proceedings was quite a gathering of Appo's descendants and others with interest in the Chinese community. I was invited to say a few words about the book I wrote about Appo, which was published in 2010 by the Nelson Provincial Museum. There are only a few copies left of the Appo Hocton book, so get in touch if you are looking for one.
